Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by Dav Pilkey

As we continue our unit on making connections, second graders read the book Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving by Dav Pilkey. This is a silly and entertaining book about children who find a way to have turkey for Thanksgiving. However, they are there as guests, not the meal, thanks to some brave children who find a way to save them! Let's share some more connections with this story, and I would also like you to discuss why you think the author, Dav Pilkey, decided to write this story?

The Most Thankful Thing by Lisa McCourt

Mrs. Fala's second graders have been learning about the three different types of connections a reader can make while they read. In addition, they have been learning about how this can help them better understand and enjoy what they are reading. This week we read The Most Thankful Thing by Lisa McCourt which is a sweet story about a mom and a daughter who share stories about what they are thankful for in their lives. I would like Mrs. Fala's second graders to share a connection they made with this story in celebration of our upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.

Making Soup by Lea Martin

One of the second grade reading groups read the book Making Soup by Lea Martin, which is a fun story about a Hen who is making some soup to enjoy. However, as it is cooking her friends decide to "take a sip" of her soup without her knowing. To her surprise, when she is ready to eat her soup, she finds the pot empty! We enjoyed discussing why we thought this story was funny, as well as why we thought the author chose to write it. We decided that it was to entertain us. Last, we talked about the three different types of connections that you can make with the books that you read: text to self, text to text and text to world. I would like each of you to pick your favorite type of connection and write a comment sharing what this book made you think about as you read it.
